Dear Buena Vista Families,
As we approach Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, our school has been taking time to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and his powerful message of hope, courage, and dreaming of a better future for all.
Last week, during our Dreams Assembly, I spoke with students about the importance of having dreams for their future and how their daily efforts at school — especially in reading, writing, mathematics, and learning new skills — help prepare them to achieve their goals and career aspirations.
Students learned three important rules for having a dream:
You’ve got to have a dream.
Without a dream, we don’t have direction or goals for our day-to-day actions or our future. Connecting the purpose of school with the achievement of future aspirations is powerful and can bring clarity and focus to the learning students do each day at school. You’ve got to be careful who you listen to.
Some people may laugh at your dream or say you aren’t good enough or smart enough. We encouraged students not to let anyone be a dream-breaker, but instead to stay strong and be dream-makers for themselves and others. You’ve got to be willing to pay the price.
Achieving a dream takes hard work, perseverance, and doing your best — even when learning feels challenging.
I also shared with students that it’s okay if their dreams change along the way — but it’s important to always have a dream and continue working toward it.
As you enjoy the upcoming three-day weekend (no school on Monday in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day), we encourage you to talk with your child about their dreams for the future and the importance of working hard each day to help make those dreams a reality.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Have a wonderful and meaningful weekend.
Warmly,
Mark Hinthorn
Director
